LilDragon

I planned to make some pots for plants, mugs and some such practical things recently, now that I have got access to clay and kiln. All that came out was monsters, monsters, monsters.

This little creature is in earthenware and is about to go into the kiln tonight. I am planning a more intricate post later with all of my recent clay monsters. One of them is disguised as a soapdish. This little guy does not yet have a name. He is sleeping and resting on white silk coloured with coffee. Let’s hope the firing (fireing?) goes alright, I discovered a tiny crack in the body during the curing time (which was way shorter than for Hemlo the platypus). Time will tell.

Here is the drollery from the previous post, but in its natural habitat. I really like doing long, complicated lists and decorating them.

I really like the hanging dragon in the bottom of the picture. As you can see, this is reminiscent of the background art of the blog. I have some plans on making another complicated, detailed work of art with pen and ink, but this time with fountain pens in A3 (background was made with fiber-tipped pens in A4).

When I get my next job I think I am going to sponsor myself with a modified Namiki Falcon XXF (spencerian modification) from Richard Binder. I’d like to see what I can make with that kind of instrument. I am planning om spending some more time on Fountain Pen Network and perhaps getting a used one. They somtimes show up in the marketplace. In this review by The Penny Writer there is some pictures of a modified Namiki Falcon that got me interested in this pen. Here is another on the calligraphy blog A Place To Flourish by Jane Farr, a very inspiring artist. There is also some reviews and more photos on Richard Binders homepage and on Fountain Pen Network (take a look in the subforum with Japanese pens, Pens from the Land of the Rising Sun where I found this impressive Youtube review of the pen).

This is my new view. I moved about 20 meters, to apartment- and cat-sit a few weeks for a friend who is away working. This will continue either til the middle of march or until I get a job (still no news) and know where I am headed next. The uncertainty is getting to me a little, but I try (and somewhat succeed) to enjoy the moment. Not too difficult, when I am waking up to scenes like this:

I now live with boxes, cats and assorted books and trinkets I could not make myself to stove away properly (I have always liked to really live in my living space). One thing that is packed is my ink and art stuff collection (part of it, anyway) below. These things have a tendency to accumulate. Nota bene, this is far from everything I’ve got:

Computer alteration: Scanned, minimized and birghtness/contrast manipulated a little.
Notes: for more info look at the post below. This image is added for comparison, illustrating how different a drawing becomes when scanned with a good scanner vs photographed with a low capacity web camera. Now, I know very well that you all are aware of this already, but still. This version is of course more true to the original. Look especially at the legs, the camera really couldn’t handle the hatching (sic?). I like the glasses better on the first version, though. A warmer, softer coulour.

Upcoming: now, I guess I have to do a “Revenge of the Mutated Green Hippie Duck” as well?

As I already wrote about in the post For the Love of Monsters, I admire the writings of China Miéville. Perdido Street Station is his second book and the first one I read about 2-3 years ago.

Title: Nightmare Cityscape, New Crobuzon interpretation.
Size: 20×17.5 cm
Equipment: I mainly grabbed what pens I could find as I went along. Lamy 2000, Parker 51, Pentel Brush Pen, sable hair brush, Pentel aquash pens with ink washes. I had to toss one of the aquash pens, as Noodler’s black and the water had become a slimy sludge inside it. Too early for ink to monsterize even before it has left the brush… It was probably contaminated water that destroyed it.
Inks: Rome Burning (yellow-brown), Burma Road Brown (brownish green), Diamine Damson (purple) and black (Noodlers and Pentel brush pen black). Add waterwashes and there you go. The gray is all Noodlers black in washes. I like how the black stays black-gray and does not go toward blue or any other colour when diluted.
Computer alteration: Contrast heightened a bit.
Paper: The paper is too porous to expose to Rome Burning effects, adding water at this point would dissolve it. Clairefontaine 90g sketch paper. Better planning (any planning) and I would have used another paper for this water-heavy experiment. It does take a lot of water for a sketch pad, though. Right now it is my favourite paper.
Inspiration: This drawing grew like something organic sprouted out of the paper. I started out drawing the mouth at the left. As it grew, I came to realise that it was New Crobuzon on the night when the nightmares arrive. The eye-helicopters are my interpretation of potential nightmares. To me a giant eyeball merged with a helicopter seem like nightmare-stuff. Foucault meets Argus meets Stephen King. And where would we be without tentacles? Not on this blog, that is for sure.
Important notice: The inside of my brain probably look a bit like this.
Notes: I did not use the colour changing effects available by washing out Rome Burning in this drawing due to too soft paper. But still, used it in art and I do like the light yellow it becomes when carefully waterwashed without “cleaning off” the yellow pigment. Look at this tentacled man-in-the-moon:

Hey, now I got 9 followers! Cool. Taking a break from skiing to publish this post that I prepared in advance. Haven’t prepared any other posts, so we’ll see if I manage to produce something at all next week in Edinburgh!

Title: Mad Carpet Collar #2, Jazz ed.
Size: app 6×10 cm
Equipment: Parker 51, Noodler’s Black. I’m soon out of Noodler’s black. This is not strange or unexpected at all. I wonder if there is any Gallon-sized bottles available?
Paper: Clairefontaine
Computer manipulation: This one I did some experimenting on. I turned it to grayscale and upped the contrast and brightness. For comparison there is a detail from the non-manipulated version of the image below. In that detail you can also see that my sloppy scanning made part of the picture come out a bit blurred.
Inspiration: Mad Carpet (of Doom)! See previous post. I think this guy looks a little jazzy with his sunglasses, hat and features. He also looks quite undead and dripping. I like it. I have been playing the browser-based game Echo Bazaar lately, he does look like something/someone you might meet in London Below. The collar is supposed to be inspired by the mad/magic (why do these words so often seem like synonyms to me?) carpet, but I think it might as well be worms.
Important Notice: I like worms. Especially flatworms. I was partly inspired by the excellent blog Coffee Grinder Press by Shawn Newton who recently commented on the blog. Take a look at the Inky worms!
Another Important Notice: Look, his hat is bleeding!
Notes: There is a couple of rapid fashion-ish sketches in the background. Me trying to get into the whole fashion illustration thing, getting a feel for the silhouettes. In time I hope to get them more harmonious and ”grounded” even if I am quite satisfied with how they did turn out. Although it looks like they have beaks, now that I look at them a bit closer. All the better, really.
Coming up I have so many ideas for upcoming posts. I’d still like to present my favourite Etsy sellers. Also, I am playing with the thought of making a hypothetical clothes collection, preliminarily named MonsterWear 2012.

This post is also the one-year anniversary for this blog! Horray! The anniversary is really the 22nd, but I unexpectedly got to go to work tomorrow, so here we go today instead. 53 posts, almost exactly one each week.

Title: The Pale Guards
Inspiration: These little guys just came out of nowhere.
Notes: As you can se the left one has escaped the knotwork (I had a thing for knotwork a while ago, I still haven’t given up getting better at it). The other guard is still entangled.
I need to make more “myller” (see the very first post of the blog to see more of the original drawing).
In Other News: the following year I hope to post a little bit more often. I would also like to investigate how to make prints/litographies of some of my work, I am also planning to get going with fountain pen restoration. In December I bought a couple of books on how to make dolls and I plan on making a small, jointed swamp-elf doll sometime in 2012. It will be an exciting year, hopefully better that 2011 which was alright but with a lot of rather stressful, life-changing stuff. I’m hoping for this year to be more calm and orderly.

Title: Hopping Horsebirds
Equipment: Lamy Safari B nib with Noodler’s Apache Sunset. Parker 51 EF with Noodler’s Black. Lamy Safari EF with Diamine Poppy Red (for the tongues).
Paper: Rhodia lined notebook
Inspiration: Intuitive drawing with the goal of making these critters really move. I am not sure I am up to psychoanalyzing exactly why I consistently return to motifs of fish, birds, weird animal combinations and juxtaplorations (my very own, very new portmanteau, it gets NO hits at all on Google. Cool. Experimental linguistics certainly lost a talent when I decided to pursue other areas of academia).
Notes: The Lamy Safari B nib is broad and wet to the point that it is possible to use it as a “brush” of sorts, as you can see in the drawing. No brush, no washes, no brush-pen. Just fountain pens! The technique is the same as in the post Drollerish Alien Landscape, only the black colour is here Noodler’s black instead of Parker Black Cartridge. It is interesting how different the colour-palette becomes after changing only one component. It is like the bluish black of the Parker brought forth the orange in the Apache Sunset, while the Noodler’s black mixed with Apache Sunset made all these greenish hues come through. Another good thing with the Noodler’s Black is that it is permanent when dry, so by blending quickly you get a nice mix, but if you want a clear black line you can get that too.
Important notice: The horsebirds are confused because they cannot fly. This is why they are hopping around in vain trying to lift from ground. As they are not very smart, it is unlikely they will stop hopping anytime soon. Quite tragic, really.

Ah well. As the year rapidly draws to an end I manage to produce something that has been on my mind almosts the whole year. An entry to the Noodler’s Artist Prize. As I finished my entry I discovered that the original has to be sent in by snailmail and thus, I believe I am too late to enter the competition. So, I’ll post my drawing on the blog instead, but I am still not too proud to send a message to Noodler’s Ink by their Contact Page informing of this post.

Why?

1) I love Noodler’s ink and I am happy informing everyone of this.
2) I appreciate the incentive of this competition. It has moved my muse, of which I am grateful. I’d like those responsible to know this, even if I can’t participate in the contest.
3) I’d like to show you my Noodler-Griffin.

Now, to the drawing:

Title: Noodler’s Griffin
Size: about 10×10 cm (I tried to make a bigger one, I really tried!)
Inks: (all Noodler’s inks) Zhivago (which is great as a black-with-only-a-hint-of-green in a pen but really shows its large capacity when used in water washes), Apache Sunset (also great shading alone as well as in washes). For the pillow the majestic Purple Martin and for the tassle Red Rattler and Lexington Gray.
Pens: Noodler’s brush pen. Noodler’s flex pens.
Paper: Seawhite of Brighton.
Computer alteration: Scanned and cut, heightened brightness as well as contrast a little.
Inspiration: Mythical creature meets Catfish. I had several other ideas as well, but this one inspired me the most today.
Notes: I think this went rather well, although the griffin is a tad more youngish than intended. Maybe the holiday spirit made me veer off from the regular scary-monster theme. I blame Christmas. But approach this little one with caution, it could very well bite your head off.
In Other News I must confess that I wish there were an Artist Prize of 2012 as well…

Why is green the traditional monster-colour (because it is, isn’t it?)? Is it because it is the perfect combination of alien and organic? The combination appeals to me.

A completely different concept that hit me while writing this post is juxtaposition (which by the way is an amazing word). I have seen “juxtaposition” used to describe when you look at something, then look again and see something else. I am not perfectly sure this is the correct way to use the word, though (see the wiki link for the common definitions). This is also a classic technique to identify being asleep and dreaming, when you play with lucid dreaming (if you look at something twice while dreaming, it will probably change in an “unnatural” way and you can by recognzing this intellectually “wake up” while still dreaming and take control over the dream). Personally, I like to experience this while awake as well, to look outside of the box if you will. Everything is there for you to experience, you just have to look for it properly. I am not sure if this theory/way of thinking has a name, but it certainly has my name on it.

Title: Greendrop monsters
Size: app. 15×5 cms
Equipment: Liquid acrylics, Daler-Rowney. Mixed with old tubes of gouache.
Computer alteration: none
Paper: Green cardboard. Several years ago I bought a lot of cardboard in different colour, as I’d recently begun using soft pastels. I’d still like to play more with that medium.
Notes: Made, as you probably already guessed, by blowing on blobs of paint in different directions. This is commonly called blow painting and some people use straws. I didn’t.
Inspiration: Making these creatures was fun and proves that there is monsters in every drop of paint, if you just care to look for them. I like the shadowplay, the shifts in the greens.
